The Winchester Hotel is on the right of this picture at Elm Street.  The first trolley entered Winsted from Torrington on July 3, 1897. The office and trolley barn were located in Burrville. The last trolley left Winsted the first week in January of 1929. A branch line opened in 1898 that passed over old Route 8 (in Burrville) and continued up the side of the mountain to Highland Lake and on to the Electric Park (Pavillon) This run to the lake continued until 1928. From readings of the day, the traffic jams created by the Trolley running on Main Street, especially on Saturday nights, caused so many problems that the Police Chief lead an intense campaign to end the Trolley service. He Won!!!
