The
Winchester Historical Society, located on the corner of Lake and Prospect
Street in Winsted, is a beautiful 13 room mansion built in 1813. It was
built by Solomon Rockwell, grandfather of Mary P. Hinsdale. After her
death, the Historical Society purchased the homestead from her nephew,
Theodore Hinsdale. This majestic mansion is filled with objects of early
Americana. Fine furniture, glassware, china; an especially fine art collection
in addition to a room filled with Civil War memorabilia are on display.
A room, dedicated to the products that have been manufactured in Winsted
throughout the years, are also displayed. The carriage house, to the left
of the main building, is home to the Winsted Fire Departments museum.
The Society and its Board of Trustees invites and welcomes visitors throughout
the year.
